National Chewing Gum Day/Wrigley Chewing Gum Day
-- The cultural tradition of chewing gum seems to have developed through a convergent evolution process, as traces of this habit have arisen separately in many of the early civilizations. Each of the early precursors to chewing gum was derived from natural growths local to the region and was chewed purely out of the instinctual desire to masticate. Early chewers did not necessarily desire to derive nutritional benefits from their chewable substances, but at times sought taste stimuli and teeth cleaning or breath-freshening capabilities. Sitting in his workshop one day, tired and discouraged, Thomas Adams popped a piece of surplus chicle stock into his mouth. In 1870, he opened the world's first chewing gum factory.

-- Americans began chewing gum long before 1850, scraping the resin from spruce trees, removing any bits of bark or insects, and chewing the finished product. Commercially-made gum was of limited availability and came in three types--tree resin, petroleum-based paraffin, and chicle-based -- the latter, a natural latex, ultimately eclipsing its rivals by 1920. Once considered a women-only bad habit, chewing gum grew in popularity and was soon indulged in by all segments of society. The gum industry tried vigorously to export the habit, but it proved uniquely American and would not stick abroad.

Quick Draw McGraw's Birthday
- Quick Draw McGraw is a fictional anthropomorphic horse and the protagonist and title character of The Quick Draw McGraw Show. He is depicted as wearing a red cowboy hat and a light blue bandana. He was voiced by Daws Butler. All 45 of his cartoons that originally aired between 1959 and 1962 were written by Michael Maltese, known best for his work at the Warner Bros. cartoon studio. The cartoon was one of six TV shows to win an Emmy Award in 1960.

Shamu the Whale's Birthday (1985)
- Did you know killer whales live in all oceans of the world? Most are found near the Arctic and Antarctic, where it's icy cold. Shamu was a killer whale (orca) that appeared in shows at SeaWorld San Diego in the mid/late 1960s. She was the fourth orca ever captured, and the second female. She was caught in October 1965 and died in August 1971, after about six years of performance. After her death, the name Shamu continued to be used in SeaWorld.
