-- The origins of taffy is often debated, but this chewy candy has been part of American life since the late 1800s. Salt water taffy was created in Atlantic City in 1883 by a shopkeeper on the boardwalk named David Bradley. In 1883, a storm surge flooded Bradley's store and covered his candy inventory in seawater, the day after the storm he was cleaning up when a girl entered the store and asked for a bag of taffy. With sarcasm, he told the girl to help herself to his salt water taffy, and the name stuck.

Read: Atlantic City Then and Now, by Edward Arthur Mauger
-- Welcome to Atlantic City, New Jersey, the birthplace of many pop culture phenomena, including Monopoly, the Miss America Pageant, salt-water taffy and The Donald (Trump, that is). Discover the extraordinary history of this glamorous resort town. Fascinating then-and-now photographs highlight Atlantic City's evolution - from its early days as a get-away for Philadelphians, through its decline in the mid-20th century, to its 21st-century incarnation as a gambling and entertainment mecca.

-- Benjamin Franklin is widely credited as the inventor of bifocals. According to the Antique Spectacles and Other Visual Aids museum, curated by Dr. David A. Fleishman, an archived political cartoon dated 1764 and held by The Library Company of Philadelphia, which was co-founded by Franklin, shows Franklin wearing an unusual pair of eyeglasses resembling bifocals.

Read: Now and Ben: The Modern Inventions of Benjamin Franklin, by Gene Barretta
-- What would you do if you lived in a community without a library, hospital, post office, or fire department? If you were Benjamin Franklin, you would set up these organizations yourself. Franklin also designed the lightning rod, suggested the idea of daylight saving time, invented bifocals and the odometer — all inspired by his common sense and intelligence. Franklin wrote, in August 1784 to his friend George Whatley, he was happy in the invention of double spectacles, which serving for distant objects as well as near ones, make my eyes as useful to me as ever they were.
