🚫 What Clearance Items You Should Never Buy: 5 “Deals” That Almost Always Cost You More Later

Clearance shopping can be amazing… but not every markdown is a smart buy. Some clearance items are risky, low-quality, expired, or simply not worth the “deal” on the sticker. If you know what to avoid, you’ll save yourself money, frustration, and returns.

All five tips are below — and #4 is the one most shoppers regret later πŸ‘‡

πŸ’¬ Tip #1

Skip clearance electronics with missing accessories.
That Bluetooth speaker or pair of headphones might look like a steal — until you realize you need a special charger or proprietary part that costs more than the item itself. If a gadget is missing cords, remotes, or adapters, the discounted price usually isn’t worth the headache of tracking down replacements.

πŸ’¬ Tip #2

Avoid deeply discounted beauty products.
Makeup, lotions, and skincare on clearance are often there because they’re close to expiration or have been discontinued. That means the formula might not be at its best anymore — and expired skincare can irritate your skin. Unless it’s sealed, dated, and from a brand you trust, skip it. The savings aren’t worth the risk.

πŸ’¬ Tip #3

Don’t buy clearance bedding or towels if the packaging is damaged.
Bedding that’s been opened or returned may have been used or exposed to allergens. Towels and sheets can pick up odors or stains you don't see until you’re home. Clearance bedding can be great — but only if the packaging is fully sealed and looks clean and intact.

πŸ’¬ Tip #4

Be careful with clearance furniture and large items.
That bookcase for 70 percent off might be missing screws, have hidden cracks, or be impossible to assemble because a piece is warped. Big items usually end up on clearance because something is wrong with them. If you can’t inspect it closely or confirm all parts are included, walk away. Regret is not worth the markdown.

πŸ’¬ Tip #5

Always check Frugal Freebies before grabbing any clearance item.
I post the best clearance finds, the biggest markdowns, and the hidden “danger buys” to avoid. A quick check here can keep you from spending money on something that looks like a deal but ends up being a dud. I share the wins and the warnings.
