Want to make some fun and frugal toys for your dog? You don’t need to spend a fortune to keep your pup happy, entertained, and mentally stimulated. Many homemade dog toys can be made using simple household items you probably already have around the house!

Water Bottle toy:
1. Get an empty plastic water bottle and a sock that is at least 5 inches longer than the bottle. Put the bottle into the sock. Tie a knot at the open end of the sock. Tie the knot tight, as your dog may chew on it, and it could become loose over time. Add some kibble for an added shaky noise!
2. DIY Plastic Bottle Toy - Does your dog love the crinkly sound of water bottles? Make a t-shirt-wrapped water bottle toy. Old, ripped, stained t-shirt - your dog won't care!
3. Making Safe and Effective Pet Toys At Home: Water Bottle Sock Puppet - Sock puppets are back (Video included)
Ball toy:
4. Fill an old sock with three tennis balls. Tie a knot at the top. It usually took about a week for my dog to tear a hole in the sock, but then you just pop the tennis balls in a new sock, and voila!
Thinking Games:
5. Hide and Seek: Grab some boxes, spread them around a room, and hide treats in a few of them. Tell your dog to

find it,and let your dog find the treats. Dogs quickly learn what is expected of them, and most dogs outright love this game. Increase the difficulty by loosely closing the boxes, requiring your dog to figure out how to get inside. Make it even more difficult by removing the boxes and hiding the treats randomly among standard items in the room.
Ball Puzzle Treat toy:
6. Does your dog wolf down his food? If your dog eats too fast, try putting a street hockey ball in his food bowl. Your dog will be forced to move the ball around to get to the food, so it will eat more slowly.
7. Tennis Ball Treat Puzzle Toy - Regular tennis balls are cheaply made, and the glue they use can be toxic to your dog. Purchase pet-safe balls from your local pet store - to quickly turn a tennis ball into a puzzle toy for your dog!
8. DIY Interactive Tennis Ball Toy - Just scissors and a pet-safe tennis ball will make this toy happen! (Video included)

9. You need a muffin/cupcake baking pan, and balls to play this game - you can use a 6, 12, or even 18-cup pan. I like to use street hockey balls and pool balls for this instead of tennis balls, since I can wash them and they last forever! Put a bit of kibble or a special treat in each muffin cup, put a ball on top, and let your dog figure out how to get to their kibble/treat! (For little dogs, you could use a mini cupcake tin and golf balls or hollow practice golf balls)

23. Free dog chew toy using a paper towel roll - The method is super fast, easy, and — one more time, y’all — it’s free! (I would use a paper towel roll instead)
24. Catster DIY: 5 Cat Toys I Made from Empty Toilet Paper Rolls - Simple Rings: This one is about as uncomplicated as it gets. Ring ball: a variation of the ring toy. Sunshine Toy: Grab a pair of scissors, and within a couple of minutes, your cat will be on the fringe. Treat Rattle: cats love noisy toys, and this one fits the bill, for sure. Treat Puzzle: You can purchase toys like these, but why would you when you can create one from empty paper rolls? (Again, I would use paper towel rolls instead)

25. No-Sew Rope Toy - This is really easy and quick to make — I am sure you already have everything you need to get started. I wanted a few different colours in my toys, so I used four t-shirts, but then I ended up with six toys. So you probably could make this with just one old T-shirt. Perfect for chewing and tug-of-war!

This line splicing is often used by sailors, but today it's for the dog toy. Makes a nice gift for any dog or dog lover. Frozen Treats and Chews:
53. Super Simple DIY Frozen Socks Dog Toy - Takes a little longer than the towel toy, but just as easy! All you need are socks. The longer the socks are, the easier it will be to make this.
54. Bully Stick Pupsicles - Replace the rawhide stick in these directions with a bully stick - uses low salt beef or chicken broth!
55. Doggy Ice Lick - Keep your canine friends cool this summer by making an ice lick that will capture your dog's interest by freezing chew toys inside a bucket filled with a mix of water and chicken broth.
56. Frozen dog treats - Frozen dog treats are a welcome treat for a trip to the beach, lying in the sun poolside, or a fun-filled Frisbee day at the beach.
57. Make polar fleece tug toys - 18-20" polar fleece, about 2" wide, 6 pieces. Knot one end, braid loosely. Knot the other end. BONUS - if they are soaked in water and placed on a cookie sheet until frozen, they make excellent teething toys. Once frozen, they can be stored in a Ziploc bag in the freezer. 60. To make a foxtail dog toy, you could just drop a tennis ball in one leg of old pantyhose or leggings, and tie a knot!
61. Homemade Foxtail-type Toy - This is a fairly simple way to reuse an old tennis ball to make a fun and entertaining toy. If you've never played with a Foxtail, they are surprisingly fun!
62. How to make a homemade foxtail ball - This one is made out of several grocery bags and a tennis ball - seems like a lot of work, I think I would save the cutting of the bags and just knot several together. (Video)
Fleece Dog toy:
63. Fleece rope with a tennis ball in the middle - Take three strips of fleece material, braid them together, and then, when you are halfway done, take a tennis ball and wrap it in one of the strips so that it is covered, then keep braiding the rest of the rope. Tie off the end. The result is similar to this toy, except the tennis ball is covered in fleece.
Sewn toys:
64. Goofy Alien Stuffie - Made from a felted sweater! These toys are fun to make and a great and special alternative to store-bought toys.
65. DIY homemade puppy toy - It’s simple, yet rugged, ragged, and apparently chewable!

Of course, generally caring for your pet is going to reduce the chances that they get ill or injured, but you can never reduce this to zero, so it’s also a good idea to make sure that you are getting them insured, just in case.
With the appropriate insurance, you will only have to pay an excess when your pet needs medical care, not the full amount. Given that medical procedures for pets can often run into the thousands, this is clearly good news if you are trying to save money. It’s absolutely vital that you are getting insurance for your pet therefore, and in some parts of the world it’s a legal requirement, so you may want to check that too.
Save On Vet Bills
There are other ways to save on vet bills too. One is to ensure you are keeping up with regular check-ups. This will actually mean that issues can be spotted early, and the result of that will be that you spend less at the vets.
