How to Tell When a Clearance Price Will Drop Again

πŸ”Ž How to Tell When a Clearance Price Will Drop Again

Clearance pricing isn’t random — stores follow patterns, cycles, and clues that can tell you exactly when a markdown is coming. If you’ve ever wondered whether to grab a deal now or wait for the next price drop, these insider tips can help you time your shopping like a pro.

All five tips are below — and #4 is the one most shoppers never check πŸ‘‡

πŸ’¬ Tip #1

Check the tiny printed date on the clearance sticker.
Most clearance tags include a small date near the barcode. This tells you exactly when the item was marked down. If the date is recent (this week), a further drop probably isn’t coming yet. But if it’s been sitting there for 2 or 3 weeks, the item is likely due for the next markdown cycle. Watching these dates can help you predict price drops with surprising accuracy.

πŸ’¬ Tip #2

Know your store’s markdown schedule.
Many stores lower prices on the same days each week — for example, HomeGoods and TJ Maxx tend to mark items down midweek, while big box stores often follow Monday or Thursday clearance cycles. If you know the store’s pattern, you can plan your visit right before a drop, not after.

πŸ’¬ Tip #3

Look for multiple stickers layered on top of each other.
If an item has two or three clearance stickers stacked, it means the price has already dropped several times. This usually signals it’s nearing the final markdown zone. If it’s still sitting on the shelf with room for another drop, waiting a few days can result in a much better deal.

πŸ’¬ Tip #4

Check whether the item has reached the “final clearance” section.
Most stores have a last-stop clearance area where heavily discounted items are moved when they’re close to being pulled. If the item is not in that section yet, it’s often still working its way through the markdown cycle — meaning one more drop may be coming. But if it is in that section, the price is likely final.

πŸ’¬ Tip #5

Always check Frugal Freebies for markdown alerts and timing tips.
I share clearance cycles, price-drop warnings, and store-by-store markdown patterns. A quick check here can help you decide whether to grab something now or wait for a potential drop. I do the tracking so you don’t have to guess.
