International Tuba Day- Created to recognize tubists in musical organizations around the world who have to go through the hassle of handling a tuba. What hassles do tubists have? Tuba players obviously have hassles due to the size and weight of their instruments, but what is actually more of a hassle for tuba players is the prevalence of stereotyped attitudes among people towards tubists and their role in a musical organization.

World Press Freedom Day-- The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.

Sears Tower Completed (1973)-- The Sears Tower, located at 233 South Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois, was completed on May 3, 1973. The Sears Tower is 1,454 feet tall, and even taller (1707 ft.) when you include its twin antennas, which are each over two hundred feet tall. The Sears Tower is a massive 110 stories tall.

First State Sales Tax (1921)-- On May 3, 1921, West Virginia was the first US state to pass legislation for a sales tax. In 1929, Georgia passed similar legislation but neither took the time to figure out how to enforce or implement the system, so there was no progress.
