Over the past few decades, a drastic decline in population numbers has been fueled by the illegal rhino horn trade, habitat loss, and political conflict. Poaching of rhino horn for the production of traditional Chinese medicine is the greatest threat facing rhino today. Since 2001, Save the Rhino has grown from a small charity raising £300,000 a year, to raising around £2,000,000 for programmes in six African and two Asian countries, for all five species of rhino.

Lei Day (1929)
-- In 1929, Lei Day was made an official holiday in the territory, a tradition which was interrupted only during the years of World War II, and which continues today. Everyone is encouraged to wear a lei. Festivities were held downtown with hula, music, lei making demonstrations and exhibits and lei making contests.
