The wedding was widely broadcast on television, internet, and radio, in more than 180 countries. Despite reports the couple would leave for their honeymoon the day after their wedding, Prince William immediately returned to his work as a search-and-rescue pilot, and the couple did not depart for their honeymoon until May 9th, ten days after their wedding - for 10 days on a secluded villa on a private island in the Seychelles.

Whitcomb Judson invented the pneumatic street railway, then marketed a Clasp Locker 42 years later. After his wife's death in 1911, Gideon Sundbäck devoted himself to the worktable and designed the modern zipper in December 1913.

- The first voyage of James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. The aims of the expedition were to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun (3–4 June of that year), and to seek evidence of the postulated Terra Australis Incognita or unknown southern land. In April 1770, they became the first Europeans to reach the east coast of Australia, making landfall on the shore of what is now known as Botany Bay.
