Image: Swagbucks is a rewards site where you earn points (called SB) for things you're probably doing online already, like searching, watching videos, discovering deals, and taking surveys

It's April, and Swagbucks has an early Easter treat in the form of a $5 bonus!

Swagbucks is a rewards site where you earn points (called SB) for things you're probably doing online already, like searching, watching videos, discovering deals, and taking surveys.

Then you take those points and exchange them for gift cards to places like Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, Target, or PayPal cash.

When you sign up through me this month, you can earn a $5 bonus! Here's how:

1. Sign up using this link

2. Earn 300 SB total before 5/1/17. You'll get a $3 (300 SB) bonus for it!

3. If you spend at least $25 through Swagbucks Shop* you'll get another $2 (200 SB) bonus on top of the cash back you'll get from shopping.
If you have some shopping to do online, just go to Swagbucks first and visit the store through them.
It doesn't cost you anything extra, but you'll get SB points for every dollar you spend (on top of the bonus)!

That's it. It's super easy, and Swagbucks is for real.

I use it myself, and I've earned 4,218 SBs just this month alone. I use it to grab Amazon gift cards - to cover my love for Amazon shopping!

*You must receive your shopping SB before June 1st

Let's Get Started!
For those that don't know, I live in Southern Ontario, just outside of Toronto.

On Saturday, we went to Niagara Falls, NY to go cross-border shopping - for the first time. I'm not much of a shopper, so never saw the need before - but a friend told us he buys all his groceries and gas there and saves so much money. So I thought we should check it out!

BTW, I had never been close to the US side of the falls, and always thought it was fairly straight across. I had no idea that it was curved as well!

We walked around the Outlet Mall for a while, then grocery shopped at Walmart - and I would say we cut our bill IN HALF - even without using coupons. I often buy store brand, but even buying store brand in the US Walmart was almost half-price - sometimes even more!

Some examples to compare:
• Baking soda - $0.99 in Canada - $0.52 in the US
• Heavy Whipping Cream - $6.99 in Canada - $2.96 in the US
• Cinnamon Toast Cereal - $6.95 in Canada - $3.98 in the US
• Coffeemate Hazelnut creamer - $5.95 for a small bottle in Canada - $5.18 for twice the size!
• Folgers coffee - $6.99 in Canada - $5.18 in the US
• Shredded cheese - $5.95 in Canada - $2.18 in the US
• Salted Butter - $4.59 in Canada - $2.68 in the US
• Eggs - 18 pack - $4.49 in Canada - $2.22 in the US
(Canadian prices are in Canadian dollars, US prices in US dollars - but the exchange rate is about $0.03 difference)

Plus we bought a 20" box fan - $32.99 in Canada - $15.88 in the US.

Oh, and the gas prices! We usually pay about $5.00 plus/gal. for gas - and it was $3.61/gal - so we filled up!

We made a day of it - we went with friends, saw the sites, had dinner at an all-you-can-eat buffet for $7.00, and went to a karaoke bar in the evening - so it was much more than just shopping!

Was it worth the trouble? We had no problems crossing the border, the wait time was reasonable, and we split the cost of the gas to get there with our friends.

Coming back, we saved all our receipts to present at the border, we spent about $103 total, not counting lunch. Since we are allowed $250 each if returning within 24 hours, we didn't have to pay any duty or additional taxes.

The gas savings alone was about $22, and the groceries half the price. To just go shopping each week, and only get a few things would not be worth it. But if you did a big shopping, say $250, your savings could be about $125, plus the gas savings - so yes, it feels worth it.

11 ft x 13 ft hexagonal Gazebo
Recently we decided to landscape our backyard - it is a 100' by 150' lot with six gardens so far. It's going to take a lot of work!

Even if we had the money, it would cost a fortune. But we don't, so we are going to re-make the backyard using recycled materials we get for free or very little cost.

First we bought a 11 ft x 13 ft hexagonal Gazebo - it was on sale at Canadian Tire for $299, marked down from $369. I paid for it with the money I had earned online from Swagbucks, so it was free!

Then, of course, I wanted a patio to go underneath it - but pricing out the cost of patio stone, even with the cheapest materials, it was out of our price range!

So we spent all our Canadian Victoria Day weekend picking up free patio and garden stones from different people thru Freecycle.org - plus we got four bins of free compost thru the city.

The picture on the right is 60 full-size 14" x 14" grey patio stones and 38 half-size patio stones in red and grey, plus a few cut stones that we got from one person.

We had to borrow my son and his truck to move all this. Thank goodness he was available!

His truck was riding pretty low, but we got them home!

Everyone seemed to be working on their landscaping this weekend, so we did really well!

On the left is a picture of a compilation of four more trips - two trips to pick up the 200 4" x 6" red bricks in my Chevy Tracker - I was worried about the weight, and we did end up with a flat the next day!

Five buckets and bins of pebbles from another person's walkway, 20 one ft x two ft patio stones from another. Gray concrete edging stone from yet another person - about 35 ft. worth.

tons of patio stones
As we were coming back from picking up the edging stone, we spied even more concrete edging stone on the side of the road, this one in red.

We pulled into their driveway and knocked on their door, asking if the stone was out to the garbage?

Yes, she said, we could have it - so we piled that into my little truck too!

We got enough red edging stone to go into the two gardens on either side of the arbour. My husband has already put it, doesn't it look nice?
We got enough red edging stone to go into the two gardens on either side of the arbour. My husband has already put it, doesn't it look nice?

Several people also offered us large rocks to make a rock garden, so we have to go back to pick them up.

Now we need more plants - last year we got a great deal at Home Depot - Extreme Couponing at Home Depot - $63.86 in Savings! - I got two rose bushes for $2.00 each (reg. $19.95 each), four Hosta plants for $2.00 each (reg. $8.99 each).Total cost - $12.00!

So with some more great deals like that, and we will keep checking Freecycle for plant giveaways, we should have enough plants for all of our gardens!

Part two coming up - as our Frugal Landscaping adventure continues...

This shopping trip we shopped at Home Depot in Southern Ontario. The plants that we bought, shown in the picture (and two more I went back for) - total value of $75.86 - only cost us $12.00!

How can you do this too??
I used the Buy 1 perennial get 1 free coupon (BOGO) from Home Depot. (expires Juy 20/11)

Read the Frugal-Freebies.com website and our Facebook fan page every day - I post all the coupons I find and use for everyone else to use too!

I had to fight for my BOGO coupon at Home Depot the other day - but I won!

I made a point of asking first if their coupon was good for the roses marked down to $4.00 at the front of the store, because a rose is a perennial, right? The store clerk said, they are only $4.00. I told her that is why I am asking first, not just assuming. If the answer is no, I will get something else.

She phoned management, asking if they accept the coupon for the roses, telling them that the roses were marked down to $4.00. Management said, "Yes".

So I got 2 rose bushes (Reg. $10.49 each - though they had already been marked down from $19.95), and went to cash.

The cashier said, "No, the cash register won't accept the coupon for this product."

I said I would go get something else and walked away. Then I thought, "No, management said I could!"

I took my roses over to Customer Service and told her what happened. She said she could not over-ride the cash register to put in the coupon. I asked her to call management again. I was very polite, and told her I appreciated her help.

The manager told her, "Yes" on the phone, told her to put them in at half price. But when she did, the bill came to $10.49!

Umm... no, they were on sale for $4.00 each. Even if I had bought them without the BOGO coupon, it would have only been $8.00.

So she called the management again and he said, "Yes, put them in at $2.00 each". Then he came down to the front desk and told her again, "Yes, it is OK."

So I got two rose bushes for $2.00 each!

My husband used his BOGO coupon to buy two Hosta plants for $4.00 each (reg. $8.99 each) and today I went back and bought two more Hostas with another BOGO coupon.

Here is what we bought, and what coupons we used:

Hosta plants - 4 @ $8.99 ($35.96) - Sale - $4.00/ea - BOGO coupon x 2 = $8.00
Rose bushes - 2 @ $19.95 ($39.90) - Sale - $10.49, then marked down again to $4.00/ea - BOGO coupon = $4.00

Total Value = $75.86

COUPON SAVINGS - $12.00

OUT-OF-POCKET COST - $12.00
!!

QUICK FREEBIE TIP:
Some don't use their last name when requesting freebies - to foil the telemarketers who take your name and address and look up your phone number to call you. To avoid these nuisance calls, they use only their first and middle name, or change some of the letters in their last name. Another benefit is that way you can track where the junk mail came from.

QUICK FREEBIE TIP:
Be cautious about where you give out your personal information. Don't provide any more information than you are comfortable with. Personally, I never give out my exact date of birth
(you can change the month or date) or telephone number. (555 is a handy area code) Some go as far as getting a P.O. Box for their freebies.
