-- Hanukkah is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. According to the Hebrew calendar, It is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev. This can fall between late November and late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival involves lighting candles on a candelabrum with nine branches, known as a menorah or hanukkiah. One branch is placed above or below the others, and its candle lights the other eight candles. This special candle is called the shamash. Each night, one additional candle is lit by the shamash until all eight candles are lit together on the festival's final night. Other Hanukkah traditions include singing Hanukkah songs, playing the dreidel game, and eating oil-based foods such as latkes, sufganiyot, and dairy products. Since the 1970s, the worldwide Chabad Hasidic movement has organized public menorah lighting in open public spaces in many countries.
