The french fries creation story can be found in a family manuscript dated 1781, revealing potatoes were originally cut into a fish-shape, and served instead of the fish normally caught in a series of small villages in Belgium. The river had frozen over and the fish they normally caught and fried could not be caught.
Even though French Fries were invented in Belgium, potatoes are a root vegetable native to the Americas, and had to be imported. The first occurrence of French fries in America may have been at a diplomatic dinner hosted by Thomas Jefferson.
The reason they are called French can be attributed to American soldiers during World War I who loved these Belgian Fries. Since the official language of the Belgian army at the time was French, the soldiers thought they were in France rather than Belgium. In that part of the world, they are still called
Flemish Fries! Now, these tasty treats are loved the world round!
