Helen Keller Day
-- A commemorative holiday to celebrate the life and achievements of Helen Keller, American activist, author, and suffragist. An observance by presidential proclamation in 1980, as well as international organizations, particularly those helping the blind and deaf. In 1904, Keller became the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor's degree in the US.
Read: The Story of My Life
-- When she was 19 months old, Helen Keller (1880–1968) suffered a severe illness leaving her blind and deaf. Not long after, she also became mute. Her tenacious struggle to overcome these handicaps - with the help of her inspired teacher, Anne Sullivan - is one of the great stories of human courage and dedication. In this classic autobiography, first published in 1903, Miss Keller recounts the first 22 years of her life, including the magical moment at the water pump when recognizing the connection between the word water and the cold liquid flowing over her hand, she realized objects had names.
The Miracle Worker
-- This movie is the story about Anne Sullivan and her efforts in working with young Helen Keller. The movie focuses on Anne's struggle to draw Helen, a blind and prelingually deaf girl out of her world of darkness and silence. Helen has been unable to communicate with her family except through physical temper tantrums since an illness took her eyesight and hearing from her at the age of 19 months old. She is allowed to eat other people's food with her hands, knock over or break items, and basically do whatever else she desires. She is barely pacified with candy when she throws a tantrum and is headed toward mental institutionalization in an asylum when Anne enters her life as Helen's parents' last-ditch effort to avoid the inevitable
