-- Harriet Lane, born May 9, 1830, was the niece of bachelor U.S. President James Buchanan. She acted as the first lady from 1857-1861 while her uncle served in office. Known as the 'Democratic Queen,' Lane was admired for her beauty and vivaciousness. She used her position as the first lady to advocate for better living conditions for Native Americans.
