- a fun day to check out what's up there. 'Ya never know what might be going on up there. An asteroid or meteor may be on it's way. A solar eclipse could be on display. A flock of geese or birds may be over head (you may need to duck for cover). Or, the clouds may be forming into interesting characters and patterns. Take a few minutes out from your busy day to look up at the sky today. If nothing else, the break from the routine will be relaxing. Source

National Licorice Day
- Licorice comes from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant. The history of licorice dates back to ancient times. It was used by the ancient Chinese, Egyptians and Greeks for its medicinal properties. In those times it was mainly used to treat maladies such as upset stomach and respiratory congestion. Licorice was found in the tomb of King Tut, and Alexander the Great's army reportedly consumed licorice. Today, it is primarily used in candies and consumed for enjoyment. Source

Big Wind Day
- Seventy-eight years ago today, the highest velocity of wind on Earth was recorded at 231 mph. No, it wasn't in Kansas or in the "Windy City" of Chicago, but at Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. Today, we celebrate Big Wind Day. They can be caused by tornadoes, hurricanes, or just air going from high to low pressure. Source

Truancy Law
- The first truancy law was enacted at New York in 1853. A $50 fine was charged against parents whose children between the ages of 5 and 15 were absent from school. Source

Space Shuttle Columbia First Launched
- the first orbital flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. Space Shuttle Columbia launched on 12 April 1981, and returned to Earth on 14 April, having orbited the Earth 37 times during the 54.5-hour mission. Source
