National Big Wind Day (1934)
- On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, three weather surveyors at the Mount Washington Observatory recorded the highest velocity of wind on Earth at 231 mph (372 km/h or 103 m/s). Today, we celebrate National Big Wind Day. They can be caused by tornadoes, hurricanes, or just air going from high to low pressure.

Space Shuttle Columbia First Launched (1921)
- The first orbital flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. Space Shuttle Columbia launched on April 12, 1981, and returned to Earth on April 14th, having orbited the Earth 37 times during the 54.5-hour mission.
