December 31st is...

New years EveNew Year's Eve
- New Year's Eve is when all the fun and festivities are. We see out the old year and ring in the new. To many Americans, the ball dropping at Times Square in New York City signals the start of the new year in this country. The ball was first dropped in 1908.

National Champagne Day
- celebrated by breaking open a bottle of bubbly! Most people need a good reason to drink champagne because it's more of a celebration drink but National Champagne Day is a holiday in itself which gives everyone an excuse to drink the bubbley!

First Nights
- First Night is an artistic and cultural celebration on New Year's Eve, taking place from afternoon until midnight. Some cities have all their events during the celebration outside, but some cities have events that are hosted indoors by organizations in the city, such as churches and theaters. Since it happens on New Year's Eve, First Night celebrations are actually held on the last night of the old year.

New Year's Resolutions
- New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes.

Make Up Your Mind Day
- a very decisive day. All during the year, you've put on hold, many issues and decisions. Eventually, they need to be resolved and decided upon. Well, today is the day. It's not a day to procrastinate. It's not a day to put off making a decision. If you are going to make up your mind this year, you'd better do it real soon. And, when you think about it, isn't it a great idea to clean the slate in advance of the new year!?

Leap Second Time Adjustment Day
- A leap second can be added, or subtracted, twice a year to keep time in sync with the atomic clock time. The second is added, or subtracted, at midnight on June 30th and January 31st.

World Peace Meditation Day
- World Peace Meditation Day is observed in recognition of the need for world peace. Meditate and find the peace that lies within yourself.

You're All Done Day
- Done with those blissful (stressful?) holidays, done with the month of December, done with the whole doggone year! Pat yourself on the back and savor your year's accomplishments. And look forward to even more this coming year!

Unlucky Day
- Unlucky Day is today. We sincerely hope it's not unlucky for you. It will be unlucky for some people. It seems fitting that Unlucky Day is the last day of the year. You get the chance to get all the bad things out of the way, do next year will be happy, healthy and prosperous.

December 30th is...

DecemberNational Bicarbonate Of Soda Day
- celebrates the many benefits and uses of Bicarbonate of Soda. Many think it is something you use for baking. But it has so many more uses. Here are just a few of them:
♦ Baking- helps baked goods, like bread, to rise
♦ Relieve stomach indigestion and heartburn when mixed in water
♦ Removing odors in the refrigerator, vents, storage areas, and closets
♦ Removing odor in kitty litter
♦ It is used in fire extinguishers for grease and oil fires
♦ It is often used as a cleaning agent
♦ It can be used as a meat tenderizer
♦ Put it in water with beans to minimize flatulence from eating beans
♦ Polish Silverware
♦ Remove burned food from a pot or a pan
And, the list goes on, and on, and......

Relaxation Day
- This day provides a day for your mind to rest, a day for dreaming, and a day for doing absolutely nothing. Avoid all stressful activities today. Let your body heal, rest and relax. Get on a float at the lake and let the smooth waves glide you.

Falling Needles Family Fest Day
- Now that the yuletide tree’s been up for weeks and hasn’t been watered since a couple of days before Christmas, gather the gang around and watch the needles gently fall one by one. Live it up! Dance barefoot!

Let's Make a Deal Day
- Monty Hall hosted this outrageous and no-skill-required game show in 1963. Audience members, many of whom wore costumes, were selected to sit in the trading area, and some were picked to “make a deal” with Hall by trading something of their own for something they were offered. Sometimes prizes were worthless (“zonks”). At the end of the show, the two people who had won the most were given the option to trade their winnings for a chance at the “Big Deal,” hidden behind one of three doors.

USSR Established
- After the Russian revolution of 1917 and the subsequent three-year civil war, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (or Soviet Union) was founded in 1922, a confederation of Russia, Byelorussia, the Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation. It was the first state in the world to be based on Marxist communism.

"The Roy Rogers Show" TV Premiere
- This very popular 1951 TV western starred Roy Rogers and his wife, Dale Evans, as themselves. It also featured Pat Brady as Rogers’s sidekick who rode a jeep named Nellybelle, the singing group Sons of the Pioneers, Rogers’s horse Trigger, Evans’s horse Buttermilk and a German shepherd named Bullet.

♦ 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months;
♦ 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year;
♦ 70 million gallons of gas — enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare;
♦ 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware;
♦ 33 tons of antibiotics.

National Chocolate Candy Day

The candy bar chosen was the famous Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar. To celebrate National Chocolate Candy Day, enjoy some of your favorite types of chocolate candy. You can start your diet tomorrow, right?

It’s natural for your colleagues and staff to want to talk to you if you can help them with their work. That being said, interruptions can also be a tremendous drain and time waster. I would LOVE a No Interruptions Day!

Poor Richard’s Almanack
- The Pennsylvania Gazette carried the first known advertisement for the first issue of Poor Richard’s Almanack by Richard Saunders (Benjamin Franklin) for the year 1733. The advertisement promised “many pleasant and witty verses, jests and sayings…new fashions, games for kisses… men and melons… breakfast in bed, &c.”

- President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act into law on December 28, 1973.

Holy Innocents Day (Childermas)
- The Massacre of the Innocents is an episode of infanticide by Herod the Great that appears in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:16-18). Matthew relates that King Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn "King of the Jews" whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi.

DecemberHolocaust Remembrance Day
- Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a day set aside for all of us to remember and learn about the horrors of the Holocaust.

[CORRECTION: Sorry, I can't recall where I first read that this special day was on December 27th, but when I looked it up now, it says the day changes each year "Yom HaShoah falls every year on the 27th Nissan" - http://www.yomhashoah.org.uk/dates ]

"Howdy Doody" TV Premiere
- The first popular children’s show was brought to TV by Bob Smith in 1947 and was one of the first regular NBC shows to be shown in color. It was set in the circus town of Doodyville. Children sat in the bleachers’ “Peanut Gallery” and participated in activities such as songs and stories. Did anyone watch this show?

Visit the Zoo Day
- Everybody loves a trip to the zoo! The animals never cease to entertain, and there aren’t any TVs or games to distract your youngsters. Why not take advantage of these national treasures and celebrate Visit the Zoo Day on December 27 as a family?

Louis Pasteur
- French chemist-bacteriologist born at Dole, Jura, France in 1822. Died at Villeneuve l’Etang, France, Sept 28, 1895. Discoverer of prophylactic inoculation against rabies. Pasteurization process named for him.

Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day
- Here's a day to show your crafty skills, as you make paper snowflakes. Making cut out snowflakes is a great project for kids. However, you don't have to be a kid, to have fun making paper snowflakes. It's a skill that is practiced by many people.

National Fruit Cake Day
- It wouldn't be Christmas if the traditional fruit cake wasn't sitting on the dessert table. Fruitcake (or fruit cake) is a cake made with chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit, nuts and spices, and optionally soaked in spirits. In the United Kingdom certain rich versions may be iced and decorated.

December 26th is...

DecemberBoxing Day
- Boxing Day is celebrated in England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other former British commonwealth countries. It is a traditional celebration dating back to the Middle Ages, of which the primary practice is the giving of gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class. On 26th December, after all the Christmas parties, the lord of the manor would give practical goods such as cloth, grains, and tools to the serfs who lived on his land. Each family would receive a box full of such goods, hence "Boxing Day." According to this tradition, the lord of the manor did not volunteer, but was obliged to supply these gifts.

National Thank-you Note Day
- The presents have been unwrapped and put away. It’s official: the holidays are winding down. Now it’s time to write those thank you notes. National Thank You Note Day recognizes the importance of showing gratitude toward loved ones.

National Whiner's Day
- A day dedicated to whiners, especially those who return Christmas gifts and need lots of attention. People are encouraged to be happy about what they do have, rather than unhappy about what they don’t have.

Recyclable Packaging Day
- I couldn't find any info on this holiday, but perhaps it's to remind us to gather up the gift bags, cloth bags, ribbons and tissue paper and either save them to use them again next year or make sure to put them into the recycling bin instead of the garbage.

Awful Tie Day
- Today is the date to wear the ties your children give you, before they suffer unfortunate accidents in the washing machine.

Saint Stephen's Day
- One of the seven deacons named by the apostles to distribute alms. Died during first century. Feast Day is Dec 26 and is observed as a public holiday in Austria and the Republic of Ireland.

Radium Discovered
- French scientists Pierre and Marie Curie discovered the element radium in 1898, for which they later won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

National Candy Cane Day
- The candy cane was originally a straight, hard, and all-white candy stick invented by French priests in the early 1400s. The cane shape is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight sugar sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's staff, and gave them to children at church services. Another theory is that, as people decorated their Yule trees with food, the bent candy cane was invented as a functional solution. Candy with red stripes first appeared in the early 1900s.

National Coffee Percolator Day
- A coffee percolator (caffettiera in Italian) it is a type of pot used to brew coffee. The name stems from the word "percolate" which means to cause (a solvent) to pass through a permeable substance especially for extracting a soluble constituent. It's not used much anymore but this day celebrates the percolator that's used for making coffee. Do you have an old one tucked away in your kitchen cabinet?

QUICK FREEBIE TIP:
Be cautious about where you give out your personal information. Don't provide any more information than you are comfortable with. Personally, I never give out my exact date of birth (you can change the month or date) or telephone number. (555 is a handy area code) Some go as far as getting a P.O. Box for their freebies.
