-- As legend has it, in 1376, townspeople hired a rat catcher to lure away the vermin overrunning their village. The rat-catcher, dressed in multicolored (pied) clothes, does this by playing an alluring song on his pipe. After successfully ridding the town of rats, the people of Hamelin refused to pay the piper. So the man - a pied piper - returned a year later, and lured more than a hundred children out of their homes in Hamelin, Germany, never to be seen again.
