-- This is a day to celebrate and appreciate the storied history of an ancient musical device, the noble Highland Scottish Bagpipe. However, they have come from many different places, and there are many variations of them. They have also been used in many different contexts. Bagpipes may have been used for centuries before any record of them was made. Many believe bagpipes were invented in the Middle East, and sheep and goat herders used them in Mesopotamia. They were used in ancient Egypt. A Hittite wall carving from around 1000 BCE shows a form of a bagpipe, and bagpipes are mentioned in the book of Daniel in the Bible. A bagpiper is also possibly depicted on an Alexandrian terracotta figure from around 100 BCE.

-- Bagpiping runs in the Bagpiper’s blood. His father played the bagpipes, and so did his grandfather, his great-grandfather, and their grandfathers before them, all the way back to the day the beloved musical instrument first arrived in Scotland. He has played his pipes for weddings, marches, wrestling matches, and haggis-eating contests (He has also played them at chess tournaments and libraries, but for some reason, his enthusiastic performances didn't go over so well then). Other musical styles may come and go, but the Bagpiper knows in his heart that the bagpipes will last forever!
