All-American Soap Box Derby Day
-- The Soap Box is a youth soapbox car racing program run in the U.S. since 1934. In 1933, a photographer for the Dayton, Ohio, newspaper, Dayton Daily News (Myron Scott), organized an impromptu race for 19 boys. Due to the high interest, Scott arranged a bigger race, with prize money, for August 19. An incredible crowd of 362 kids showed up with their homemade cars built of orange crates, sheet tin, wagon, and baby buggy wheels!

-- Ronald Reed is first, and foremost, a derby fan. Growing up in suburban Akron, he attended his first All-American race in 1949 at age seven. Since then, he has missed only three. By his personal account, he has witnessed more national derby races than any living person. He never raced as a boy, lacking the skill to construct a racer. As he explains it, the trouble was that everything I made looked like I made it. In 1973, Ronald began carving miniature replicas of the top three racers of each year's All-American, dating back to 1933. These cars are currently on display at the Derby Museum at Derby Downs in Akron.

-- Author David Fulton started in the Soap Box Derby in 1978. With a background as a Professional Aircraft Mechanic, Aircraft Inspector, and lifetime tinkerer, Dave quickly adapted to the science and mechanics of Soap Box Derby. Over the years, all three sons won their local races and competed in the World Championship races in Akron. Dave's middle son, Christopher, was fortunate enough to win the 1980 Junior Division World Championship Race in Akron, Ohio. Dave has taken all the racing techniques he has learned over the years and put them in Winning Ingredients.
