Free Glucose Meters (US/CDN)

Free Diabetic MeterI recently started a low carb/high fat diet and it seems to be working - I have lost 5 lbs in 4 days!

Last year I got a free glucose meter - Bayer Contour USB - just because it was free! LOL
(sorry, that offer has now expired - but new offers below!)

The Bayer meter kit included everything I needed to start testing my blood sugar levels. Free test strips, lancets, and more - a $65 value!

So, as part of my diet, I have been experimenting with checking my blood sugar before and after meals to see what foods raise up my levels - even though I have not been diagnosed as a diabetic.

(My numbers were not great though, when I first started testing - so I did go to the doctor to get further testing.)

Oh, and it doesn't really hurt to test, I was surprised! The lancet gadget Bayer included was very simple to use and almost painless.

After eating my normal breakfast of gluten-free cereal and hot chocolate (I am not normally a coffee drinker), here were my numbers last week:
Before breakfast - 108 US ... (6.0 CDN)
One hour after - 205 US ... (11.39 CDN)
Two hours after - 146 US ... (8.1 CDN)

(Normal levels before breakfast should be 83 US (4.6 CDN) or less. Normal levels should be under 120 US (6.6 CDN) one or two hours after a meal - Source )

So I have been tweaking my diet, and today after Hot Hemp Cereal and coffee with heavy whipping cream, using date palm sugar to sweeten, here are my numbers:
Before breakfast - 106 US ... (5.89 CDN)
One hour after - 120 US ... (6.67 CDN)
Two hours after - 116 US ... (6.4 CDN)

So I still have more tweaking to do!

I think that an important part of getting this low carb/high fat diet right is testing how each food affect you, so I thought I would share where you could get free glucose meters too!
